Winter weddings have a magic all their own, especially when they’re thoughtfully planned around the season. Pat and Rachel’s wedding on December 13, 2025, in Fargo, North Dakota, was a beautiful example of how embracing winter can elevate both the experience and the photography. These winter wedding photography tips are inspired by their day and are perfect for couples planning a cold weather celebration.
OWhen planning a winter wedding in Fargo, one of the most important decisions you can make is choosing the right indoor space for your wedding photos. As a Fargo wedding photographer, one of my top winter wedding photography tips is to plan for an indoor location with beautiful natural light—even if it’s separate from your ceremony or reception venue.
In colder climates like North Dakota, staying warm while still achieving timeless, light-filled images is key. For Pat & Rachel’s winter wedding, we booked a separate indoor photo location specifically for portraits and large group photos. Their wedding party photos were taken at the Plains Art Museum, a Downtown Fargo venue that photographed beautifully and allowed us to avoid harsh winter weather entirely. Their ceremony then took place at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, and the reception was at the Delta Hotels Fargo.
This indoor space offered everything ideal for winter wedding photography:
Choosing a dedicated indoor photo space also provides consistency—no battling wind, snow, or freezing temperatures—making the photo experience more relaxed and efficient for couples and wedding parties alike.
If you’re planning a Downtown Fargo winter wedding, some of my favorite indoor photo locations for large wedding parties include:
Each of these Fargo wedding venues offers ample space, stunning light, and a clean, timeless aesthetic that works beautifully for winter weddings and indoor portraits.
When planning your winter wedding in Fargo, thinking intentionally about where your photos will take place—whether that’s your venue or a separate indoor studio—can make a significant difference in both your wedding day experience and the quality of your final images.

Rather than fighting the season, Pat and Rachel leaned into it. Deep winter tones photographed beautifully and added richness to every image. Consider incorporating:
These colors complement winter lighting and help create timeless wedding photos.

Fir and evergreen decor served a dual purpose at Pat and Rachel’s wedding with style and warmth. From greenery lined tables to winter inspired accents, these elements helped the space feel inviting while staying seasonally on theme.
For photography, natural greenery adds texture, contrast, and softness, especially against winter whites and darker palettes.

Comfort matters more than most couples realize, especially in winter. One of the most practical winter wedding photography tips is planning for warmth so genuine moments shine through. Pat and Rachel incorporated:
When couples are comfortable, their expressions are natural, and the photos reflect that authenticity.

Pat and Rachel’s December wedding proves that winter weddings can be both elegant and cozy when planned with intention. By choosing the right indoor venue, embracing deep winter colors, and using seasonal elements like fir, couples can create a stunning atmosphere that photographs beautifully.
