As a wedding photographer, I’ve spent years documenting some of the most meaningful days in my clients’ lives. I’ve guided timelines, captured emotional moments, and encouraged couples to slow down and soak it all in. But after having my own wedding, my wedding photographer perspective changed in ways I never expected.
Experiencing a wedding day firsthand gave me a deeper appreciation for what my couples are feeling. The excitement, the emotions, the planning, and how quickly the day flies by all became much more personal.
Lindsay & Tony’s beautiful day was my first wedding back to work after my own, and it reminded me of several lessons I now carry into every wedding I photograph.

Before planning my own wedding, I understood that details were important. After my wedding, I realize just how much thought, intention, time, and hard work that goes into every single choice.
From invitations and florals to heirloom jewelry and personalized dĂ©cor, every detail tells part of a couple’s story. There were even details from my own wedding that I almost skipped because I didn’t think anyone would notice. Looking back, I know the importance of capturing every little element that help make your day feel unique.
That’s why I now place even more emphasis on capturing every thoughtfully chosen detail during a wedding day. Whether it’s something grand or seemingly small, those details become part of the memories couples treasure for years to come.
When photographing Lindsay & Tony’s wedding, I was reminded that every carefully chosen detail deserves to be documented because each one plays a role in telling the story of the day and their love story!

One of the biggest surprises from my own wedding was how quickly everything moved. The day I had spent over a year planning seemed to pass in a blur. There were moments when I felt rushed from one event to the next, and before I knew it, the day was over.
Because of that experience, one of my biggest priorities as a photographer is helping couples stay present. While beautiful photos are important, I never want photography to take away from the experience itself.
I intentionally build moments into the timeline where couples can simply be together, take a breath, and enjoy what’s happening around them. Some of the most meaningful memories come from those quiet in-between moments when couples are fully present with each other and their loved ones.
One of the most important changes in my wedding photographer perspective is realizing that great photographs come from genuine moments, not from constantly rushing from one thing to the next.

If there’s one piece of advice I find myself sharing more often now, it’s this: hire a wedding planner!!!
After planning my own wedding, I can confidently say that there is no way my vision would have come to life without professional help. A dedicated wedding planner handled logistics, coordinated vendors, managed setup, and allowed our families to actually enjoy the day instead of working behind the scenes.
Venue coordinators are incredibly valuable, but their role is often very different from that of a full-service planner. Having someone focused solely on executing your vision can make a tremendous difference in both the experience and the outcome of your wedding day.
Watching Lindsay & Tony’s wedding unfold reminded me how much smoother and more enjoyable a wedding can be when a strong planning team is involved. One of the biggest shifts in my wedding photographer perspective has been understanding just how valuable a great planner truly is.
Two of my favorite wedding planners in the Fargo area are Amy Lee from Breathe & Relax Events and Karissa Kjos from Gather Event Planner!

One thing I learned from being a bride is that there are always a few photos you absolutely don’t want to miss.
The challenge is that wedding days move quickly. Couples are focused on celebrating, greeting guests, and soaking in the experience. By the time the reception begins, many of those photo ideas have completely slipped their minds. That’s why I take shot lists seriously.
If a couple tells me there is a specific photo they want, I do everything possible to make sure it happens. Whether it’s a sentimental family portrait, a creative reception image, or a meaningful detail shot, I keep those requests top of mind throughout the day.
You only get one wedding day, and there are no do-overs. My job is to help preserve the moments that matter most.

When couples think about wedding photography, they naturally focus on portraits, ceremonies, and major events. After my own wedding, I realized how special guest photos truly are.
Some of the sweetest photos to look at aren’t necessarily the perfectly posed portraits. They’re the candid moments of family members talking, friends laughing together, grandparents watching the celebration, and loved ones enjoying the day. These photos become even more meaningful as the years pass.
At our wedding, we also had a photo booth at our reception from KZ Photobooth, and looking back through those images has been one of the most fun parts of reliving our wedding day! Seeing guests let loose, laugh, and create memories together adds another layer to the story.
Another change in my wedding photographer perspective is how intentionally I document guests throughout the day. The people who gather to celebrate with you are just as much a part of your wedding story as the couple themselves.

One lesson I didn’t fully understand until after my wedding is how much more valuable wedding photos become over time.
In the days immediately following a wedding, couples are excited to see the big moments. But as months and years pass, different images start to stand out. A hug from a grandparent. A candid smile from a parent. Friends gathered together on the dance floor.
Wedding photographs become more than beautiful images. They become a record of relationships, memories, and a season of life that can never be recreated. That’s something I think about now every time I pick up my camera.

Photographing weddings after becoming a bride myself has given me a completely new perspective. It has made me more intentional, more empathetic, and even more passionate about preserving the moments that matter most.
Looking back at Lindsay & Tony’s wedding, I see more than beautiful details and joyful celebrations. I see the experience they were living in real time, the people they love, the moments they’ll never get back, and the memories they’ll revisit through their photographs for decades to come.
My own wedding changed my wedding photographer perspective in countless ways, and that perspective continues to shape the way I approach every wedding I photograph today.
And that’s exactly why I love what I do. If you’d like to see more from my own wedding experience and the moments that helped shape my approach to photography, you can check out my post here!
