What Makes the Best Engagement Photos?

If you asked ten photographers what makes a great engagement photo, you’d probably get ten different answers. Some would say it’s beautiful light. Others would say the location or the outfits. While those things certainly help, I don’t think they’re what people remember years later.

The best engagement photos are the ones that feel like you

At LivByGrace Photography, I believe the most meaningful photos happen when you’re focused on each other instead of the camera. It’s easy to think you need a breathtaking mountain view or a perfectly coordinated outfit for your engagement photos to turn out beautifully, but the truth is, those things are just the backdrop. What really matters is the connection between the two of you.

When couples tell me they’re nervous about their engagement session, it’s almost always because they think they have to know how to pose. I completely understand that feeling. Most people aren’t in front of a professional camera very often, and it can feel a little intimidating at first.

The good news is that you don’t have to know what you’re doing.

My job isn’t to make you pose like models. My job is to create an environment where you can relax enough to simply enjoy being together. That’s why I often encourage couples to think of their engagement session as a date instead of a photoshoot. We might walk through your favorite downtown neighborhood, grab coffee, explore a park, or simply watch the sunset together. The more you’re focused on each other, the more naturally those genuine moments begin to happen.

Some of my favorite engagement photos have come from the moments in between. The laughter after an inside joke. The way one of you reaches for the other’s hand without thinking. The quiet conversations while walking from one location to the next. Those aren’t moments I create, they’re moments I notice.

I also think choosing a location that means something to your relationship makes a much bigger impact than choosing the place that’s currently trending on social media. Maybe it’s where you had your first date, your favorite hiking trail, or the coffee shop you visit every Saturday morning. Those places already tell part of your story before I ever lift my camera.

As a Fargo photographer, I love helping couples find locations that fit their personalities instead of simply chasing whatever is popular. Every couple is different, and your engagement photos should reflect that. Whether your session takes place in an open field during golden hour, downtown, by the lake, or somewhere completely unique, what matters most is that it feels like your relationship.

At the end of the day, the best engagement photos aren’t perfect because everything went exactly as planned. They’re meaningful because they capture who you are during this season of life. Years from now, I don’t want you to remember the outfit you wore or whether the sunset was especially colorful. I want you to remember how excited you were to marry your best friend.

If you’re looking for a Fargo photographer who believes your engagement session should feel relaxed, genuine, and completely true to your relationship, I’d love to help tell your story. My goal is to create photographs that don’t just show what this season looked like, but remind you exactly how it felt.
