What Should You Know Before Your Fargo Senior Session?

Planning your Fargo senior session should feel exciting, not like one more thing you have to figure out during senior year. After photographing so many different seniors since 2018, one of the biggest things I’ve learned is that the best sessions are the ones that actually feel like the person in front of my camera. Your outfits, locations, and photos don’t need to look exactly like anyone else’s. We can pull inspiration from what you love while still creating something that feels completely like you.

At LivByGrace Photography, I help my seniors plan those details before we ever start taking photos. You don’t need to show up knowing how to pose or with a perfectly curated vision. We’ll figure out what you love, choose outfits and locations that work together, and create plenty of variety throughout your gallery.

What Should You Wear for a Fargo Senior Session?

Outfits are usually one of the first things seniors start thinking about, and my biggest tip is to choose pieces that feel like you while giving us some variety. If you’re bringing multiple outfits, try not to choose three looks that feel almost identical. Instead, you might have one outfit that feels more elevated, one that’s casual and true to your everyday style, and another that’s a little more fun or trend-forward.

You also don’t need to completely reinvent yourself for senior photos. If you never wear dresses, you don’t suddenly need to wear one because that’s what you’ve seen in other senior galleries. I would much rather photograph you in something you feel confident in than an outfit that looks great on Pinterest but doesn’t feel like you.

Speaking of Pinterest, I have an entire senior outfit inspiration board for my girls. It’s a great place to start if you have no idea what to wear or just want to see how different colors, textures, layers, and styles photograph. You can use it for inspiration without feeling like you need to recreate an outfit exactly.

Where Should You Shop for Senior Photo Outfits?

You definitely don’t need to buy a completely new wardrobe for your Fargo senior session. I always recommend looking through your closet first because some of the pieces you already love are probably the ones you’ll feel most comfortable wearing. If you do want something new, though, there are a few stores I find myself recommending again and again.

Altar’d State is great for feminine dresses, skirts, tops, and softer looks, while For Love & Lemons has beautiful statement pieces if you want one outfit to feel a little more elevated. I also love Peppermayo, Cider, Selfie Leslie, Princess Polly, and Lulus for everything from simple basics to dresses and more trend-forward pieces.

When you’re shopping, think about the gallery as a whole rather than choosing each outfit separately. Different silhouettes, textures, and levels of dressiness will give us more variety without making your photos feel disconnected.

How Do You Choose Locations for Senior Photos in Fargo?

Your location should work with your outfits and the overall feeling you want for your photos. Some seniors want something natural and relaxed, while others love a downtown Fargo setting that feels a little more editorial. We can also mix the two so your gallery doesn’t feel like every photo was taken in exactly the same setting.

This is where having multiple outfits and locations can be so fun. We can pair a dressier outfit with one environment and then change into something more casual for another. Even a simple change in the background, light, or outfit can make your gallery feel completely different.

I don’t think you need to choose a location just because you’ve seen another senior take photos there, either. I’d rather think about your personality, style, and what you want your photos to feel like. Then we can choose Fargo locations that make sense for you.

Do You Need to Know How to Pose for Senior Photos?

Nope, that’s my job! One of the things I never want you worrying about before your session is whether you’re going to know what to do in front of the camera. I’ll guide you throughout your session so you know where to stand, what to do with your hands, and where to look, but I also leave plenty of room for movement and personality.

We’ll create the classic senior portraits your parents and grandparents will love, but I also want the photos that feel more like you. Switching outfits, walking around, laughing, and moving between locations helps us create a gallery that feels natural instead of overly posed.

How Do You Make Your Fargo Senior Session Feel Like You?

Use Pinterest and other senior sessions as inspiration, but don’t feel like yours needs to look exactly the same. Trends are fun, and I love helping you bring your ideas to life, but these photos are documenting your senior year. Years from now, I want you to look back and recognize the person you were in this season.

That’s really my biggest senior session tip. Choose outfits you genuinely love, pick locations that fit your personality, and don’t put pressure on yourself to know exactly what you’re doing. I’ll help with the planning and guide you once we start shooting.

If you’re looking for a photographer for your Fargo senior session, I’d love to help you create senior photos that feel confident, relaxed, and completely like you. With LivByGrace Photography, we’ll plan the details together so when your session finally arrives, you can just show up, have fun, and enjoy it.
