Megan and Matthew’s wedding at The Pines was such a beautiful example of this. Throughout their day, I photographed with both film and digital cameras, allowing each format to do what it does best. Why Do I Photograph Weddings on Both Film and Digital?

I love digital photography because it allows me to document a wedding day fully. I can capture the big moments, quick reactions, movement, changing light, and all of the little things happening in between. It gives me the freedom to tell the entire story without having to be overly selective.

Film naturally makes me slow down. With a limited number of frames on each roll, I’m more intentional about when I press the shutter. I pay attention to the light, composition, and the moments that feel especially deserving of a film frame.

Together, they create a balance that I really love.

Digital gives us the coverage and consistency of your entire wedding story, while film adds texture, grain, softness, and nostalgia. When the two are blended throughout your final gallery, you get photographs that feel connected without every image looking exactly the same.

What Does Film Add to a Wedding Gallery?

There’s something about film that’s difficult to perfectly recreate digitally. The natural grain, softer colors, beautiful skin tones, and little imperfections give the photographs so much character.

At Megan and Matthew’s wedding at The Pines, film fit naturally into the feeling of the day. It wasn’t treated like a separate part of their photography coverage. I photographed moments on digital and reached for film when something about the light, setting, or moment felt right for it.

That’s how I want film to exist in a wedding gallery. Not as a completely different collection of images, but as another layer of the same story.

There are quiet, emotional moments and loud, fast ones. There are carefully designed details and completely unplanned reactions. There’s movement, stillness, perfect light, weird light, and everything in between.

Using both film and digital gives me more ways to document all of it.
