5 Expert Family Photography Tips for Beautiful Photos

As a Fargo family photographer, I have seen that having photography tips before a family session can make the difference between a session that feels stressful and one that feels relaxed, natural, and genuinely fun. The biggest tip I can give you is to not worry about making everything perfect. The best family photographs happen when everyone has room to move, laugh, interact, and actually enjoy being together.

At LivByGrace Photography, I photograph families in Fargo, Phoenix, Minneapolis, and beyond. Over the years, I’ve learned that a few simple choices can completely change how your family photos look and, more importantly, how they feel.

1. How Can You Make Family Photos Look Natural?

Don’t worry about posing perfectly. I’ll guide you into flattering positions and make sure everyone looks their best, but I also want to leave plenty of room for your family to actually interact. Hold your little one. Walk together. Make your kids laugh. Look at your spouse. Let your kids be a little silly. Some of my favorite photographs happen right after the “posed” photo, when everyone relaxes and forgets about the camera for a second.

2. What’s the Best Lighting for Family Photography?

Soft, natural light is one of my favorite ways to create beautiful family photographs. For outdoor sessions, I especially love photographing closer to sunset when the light becomes softer and warmer. One of my biggest family photography tips is to trust your photographer when it comes to timing. We’re thinking about the sun, the location, and how the light will photograph when recommending your session time.

And don’t panic over a cloudy forecast! Overcast skies can give us some of the prettiest, softest light.

3. Where Should You Take Your Family Photos?

Choose somewhere that gives your family space to relax and be yourselves. Whether we’re photographing your family in Fargo, Minneapolis, or somewhere completely different, I don’t think you need an elaborate location. Give me beautiful light, a little room for the kids to move, and people who love each other, and we can make something beautiful.

4. What Should You Wear for Family Photos?

Coordinate rather than matching exactly. Neutral tones, earthy colors, subtle patterns, and different textures tend to photograph beautifully without distracting from the people in the image.

Comfort matters, too. If you’re constantly adjusting your outfit or your child hates what they’re wearing, it’s harder to relax. Choose something that looks beautiful but still lets you move, play, and feel like yourself.

5. What’s My Most Important Family Photography Tip?

Let go of perfection. Your toddler might not smile when you want them to. Someone might need a snack. Your kids might decide that running through the field sounds way more exciting than standing next to you. That’s okay. Sometimes those are the moments that create my favorite photographs!

At LivByGrace Photography, I want your family session to feel relaxed and true to the season you’re in right now. If you’re looking for a family photographer in Fargo, Minneapolis, or beyond, I’d love to photograph your people exactly as they are. Come ready to spend some time together, and we’ll create photographs that feel like you.
